Abstract
This study aims to investigate the influence of social exchange with adult children and of the patterns of intergenerational exchange on the depressive symptom of the elderly living in rural community. Data from the first wave of ¡ºKorean Social Life, Health and Aging Project(KSHAP)¡»data was used for analyzing 761 elderly over 60 who had at least one child. The results showed that receiving economic support from children had statistically significant impact on elderly``s depressive symptoms. Giving economic and emotional support to children also influenced elderly``s depressive symptoms. In addition, under-benefitted exchange reduced depressive symptoms more than over-benefitted exchange, and non-exchange type increased depressive symptoms more than over-benefitted exchange.
